Life has a way of throwing obstacles our way, doesn’t it? For as long as I can remember, my life was a whirlwind of chaos and dysfunction. I remember feeling all alone in my crazy, dysfunctional life, like an isolated island surrounded by a stormy sea. It was during one of these solitary moments, in the depths of my despair, that I reached out to God with a desperate plea. “God, why don’t you send someone to help me?” I cried out, longing for a lifeline, a savior, in human form.
To my surprise, one day, God replied. His words were simple yet profound: “Because I want you to depend on me only.” Those nine words shook me to my core, initiating a journey that reshaped my entire worldview.
God’s message was clear. He sought a closer relationship with me, one where my reliance was on His unwavering strength and infinite wisdom, not on the fleeting and often flawed promises of humans. This journey wasn’t about self-reliance; rather, it was about divine dependence.
Depending on God doesn’t mean we negate the importance of people in our lives, but rather, we align our ultimate faith and trust in the One who created us. Humans, bless their hearts, are clothed in suits of flesh and are susceptible to their own struggles and failings.
We’ve all experienced going to someone for help, only to realize they are grappling with their own issues. Their advice, while well-intentioned, might be colored by their own life’s messiness. Each of us is on our journey, and sometimes, the blind truly can lead the blind. However, God exists outside of this clutter; His wisdom is unadulterated, His love, boundless. Depending on Him means finding an anchor in the storm, a sanctuary where chaos cannot persist.
Human connections are valuable, and community support is indispensable. Yet, there are profound reasons why divine dependence surpasses human reliance, especially in times of turmoil. No matter how well-meaning someone might be, everyone has their own set of issues. Their perspective is inevitably limited. When you lean wholly on someone whose life might be in shambles, you risk getting advice born from their pain, fear, or misunderstanding. People come and go. They may move, change, or simply become preoccupied with their own lives. However, God’s presence is constant. His support is unwavering and eternal. Human understanding is finite. We see only a tiny fraction of the whole picture. God’s perspective is infinite. He sees the end from the beginning and knows exactly what’s best for us in every situation.
Transitioning from human to divine dependence is a process, often entailing significant inner work. Here’s how you can start. Open a consistent line of communication with God. Praying isn’t just about asking for help, but also about listening. Pour out your heart, and then be still, receptive to His guidance. The Bible is a treasure trove of wisdom, comfort, and guidance. Regularly immersing yourself in His word helps solidify your trust in Him. Reflect on God’s promises throughout the Bible. His words can serve as a fortress of strength and assurance. God’s timing is perfect, though it may not align with our own. Trust that His delays are not denials but are often meant for our growth and preparation. Engage with others who are also striving to deepen their dependence on God. A supportive faith community can provide much-needed encouragement and perspective.
As I embarked on my journey of divine dependence, I noticed a profound transformation within myself. My incessant need for human validation waned, replaced by a serene confidence in God’s plan. The same people whom I once sought to fill my void of loneliness now became companions on my journey, not saviors. I found peace in knowing that my ultimate support system lay in God, who is infallible and always present.
In a world teeming with uncertainties and human imperfections, the greatest solace lies in depending on God. His love is constant, His wisdom infinite, and His presence ever-assuring. While cherishing the relationships we forge with our fellow humans, let us remember to anchor our faith and hope in Him. After all, it is through divine dependence that we discover the profound depth of His love and the immeasurable strength He provides.
So, the next time life feels overwhelmingly crazy and dysfunctional, instead of asking for a human helper whose own life might be just as messy, turn to God. Depend on Him only, and watch how He transforms your loneliness into a profound, secure relationship with Him.
